Burbage Methodist Church is a busy and exciting church. There is a strong sense of mission and outreach as the church seeks to respond to the needs of the community. We are a forward and outward looking community known to be welcoming to newcomers and having a desire to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the wider Burbage community. While the age profile of the church is, in common with most similar churches, skewed towards the elderly, we do have a significant number of committed younger members including a small number of children.
Sunday morning worship is led by a small group of musicians each week. The congregation values the work of those who lead worship, both ordained and lay, and particularly appreciates a strong element of Biblical teaching.
Children, when present on a Sunday morning, have their own activities provided by a small and expertly led group of volunteers. We now have a regular group attending and have recently been addressing the lack of continuity between the children's own activities and what happens in the service in the time before they leave the main worship area.
There are three groups meeting regularly for further study: a monthly Bible fellowship, a fortnightly house group and a Community Bible Study (CBS UK) class which is ecumenical.
The church building is equipped with a video wall and facilities to run PC based audio-visual presentations and play CDs and DVDs. Most of our morning services are livestreamed and subsequently uploaded to YouTube.
There is a monthly Messy Church which is now coming towards the end of its second year. This has attracted a number of families with children.
In addition to the weekly Sunday morning services there is a second "congregation", Refresh, which meets monthly on a Sunday afternoon. This is led by a team of members of the church and seeks to provide a relaxed space, contemporary music, Bible based talks and multimedia presentations followed by a time of community sharing with food and refreshments. This is attended both by members of the church and also by others from around the circuit, some of whom do not regularly attend more formal worship.
Once a month, on a Saturday morning, there is a community breakfast attended by up 50. While many church members attend regularly, the breakfast has become a significant focus for welcoming into our building members of the wider community.
